Mister Roberts

This funny yet poignant play is set aboard a U.S. Navy cargo ship in the South Pacific near the end of World War II. Lt. Douglas Roberts is an outstanding naval officer who dreams of actually fighting in the war but is forced to watch from the sidelines. His battle of wits and wills with the obnoxiously arrogant Captain Morton make him a popular figure with the crew but thwart his efforts for a transfer. Also onboard is the young, highly unmotivated Ensign Pulver, the older, world-savvy “Doc” and the most engaging assortment of sailors ever to be (reluctantly) granted shore-leave. Winner of the 1948 Tony Award for Best Play, the popular film version starred Henry Fonda, James Cagney, Jack Lemmon and William Powell.
